In February 12, 2008 the .IN registry has reached 400,000 registrations.
In my opinion both are healthy growing markets. Since only a small part of Indian population has internet access .in can be expected to grow more in the coming years as the online businesses spread out in India. Canada already has a highly developed online advertising market.

Owning a .ca or a .in domain name is a great investment providing that they are a ONE word or three letter domain name in “high” demand like computer / money / Loan / Car and others alike.

A really big difference is you have to be Canadian or have Canadian presence to reg .CA.
Anyone can reg .IN.
Makes a big difference when selling too, I think.
.CA = Canadian only buyers
.IN = worldwide buyers

Both .ca and .in are good markets to be in, just be careful to reg quality domains for both.
When you look at total domains regged for each country, you also have to consider .co.in registrations. What are they at?
The recent sale of Jobs.ca for $600,000 just hit the radar of .CA investors/users.
Recent .IN sales have not been of this magnitude (yet!) but LLL and NNN are hitting new high-water marks every few weeks.
Regarding .co.in – this is a very India-centric extension which has solid footing in that country but .IN is supported as a global Indian extension. IMO
