Age Does Matter

Posted in Blogs, Opinions, Tips on March 26th, 2008 by Michael – 3 Comments

An interesting post over at the NameBio blog about aged domains:

Recently, I came into possession of a domain name registered in 1991. This domain has been continuously renewed for 17 years. (its almost old enough to vote!). However, Ive run into a few question marks, specifically in regards to determining value. Clearly older domain names have Value, they are garbled up at the expired domain auctions quite consistently, and although most caliber domainers will say that “age is but a small factor” when it comes to a VERY old domain, it can certainly become one of the most important factors.

Why is age so desired? Primarily because all the good domains were taken first, thus in theory all of the quality domain names, should be old. I find this too be a reasonably accurate statement, with exceptions on both ends. Yes, some new domains are quite valuable (new technologies, new trends) and some old domains really have nothing to offer but a history of continuous renewal. read more »

Google: Microsoft Acquisition of Yahoo would be “Bad for the Internet”

Posted in Google, Microsoft, Yahoo on March 19th, 2008 by Michael – 2 Comments

In a report published on Monday, Google said it was concerned about the free flow of information on the Internet if Microsoft was to succeed in acquiring Yahoo.“We would be concerned by any kind of acquisition of Yahoo by Microsoft,” Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told reporters.

“We would hope that anything they did would be consistent with the openness of the Internet, but I doubt it would be.”

Schmidt pointed to Microsoft’s past history and “the things that it has done that have been so difficult for everyone,” but he did not elaborate. read more »

Trade in Web Names Worth Millions

Posted in Articles, News, Press on March 16th, 2008 by Michael – 3 Comments

Another domaining article in the main press, this time from the British top newspaper the guardian:

Speculators are the latest breed of dotcom entrepreneur, buying up website domain names – and making their fortune by dealing in them.

Neil Stanley goes to bed each night knowing he will wake up a little richer. All over the world, the clicks of computer mice are depositing a few more pounds into his account. His secret is that he was smart enough to ask: what’s in a name?

Stanley is a trader in domain names, the addresses of websites which commonly follow ‘www’ and end with ‘.com’ or ‘.co.uk’. Once a banker at Goldman Sachs, he now has a different portfolio of lucrative investments including bridalfashion.co.uk, onlinecareers.co.uk, schoolguide.co.uk, sendingflowers.co.uk and impotency.co.uk. read more »

billion_dollars.jpg

Forbes.com just released a new billionaires list and Bill Gates is only #3 with $58.0 billions!

Top two positions are taken by Warren Buffett and Carlos Slim Helu & family with 62 and 60 bln respectively.

See the full list here

It’s interesting to note that among top 8 billionaires there are 4 Indians and only 2 Americans. Roman Abramovich, the owner of London Chelsea, is no longer the richest man in Russia, Oleg Deripaska is #9, who is also the youngest in the top 25. Google founders Sergey and Larry are down to positions 32 and 33.

According to Forbes there are currently 1062 billionaires in the world.

Yahoo Sued for Spurning Microsoft

Posted in Google, Microsoft, News, Yahoo on February 22nd, 2008 by Michael – Be the first to comment

AP reports:

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Two Detroit pension funds have sued Yahoo Inc. and its board of directors, saying they breached their duties to shareholders in trying to thwart a takeover by Microsoft Corp.

The lawsuit was filed in Delaware Chancery Court on Thursday by lawyers representing Detroit’s police and fire retirement system and general retirement system, as well as “all other similarly situated public shareholders.”

According to the lawsuit, Yahoo’s board is pursuing “value-destructive” third-party deals in an effort to fight off Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft, which on Feb. 1 announced a takeover bid of $31 per share in cash and stock, a 62 percent premium over Yahoo’s previous day’s closing price.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo, whose shares closed unchanged at $28.42 on Friday, rejected Microsoft’s $44.6 billion takeover bid as inadequate, but indicated that it might be willing to negotiate if the price was right. Yahoo is believed to want at least $40 per share, or about $56 billion. read more »

How to Avoid Getting Scammed in Domaining

Posted in Google, Scams, Security, Tips on February 16th, 2008 by Michael – 4 Comments

scammerThis is a complete guide on domain scammers that shows how to recognize and avoid scammers while trading domains.

There are several popular scamming schemes:

1. Scammer sells stolen domains

How it works:

Scammer trying to sell quickly a stolen domain for a bargain price.

A domain can be stolen by hacking into the a email address associated with it – like yahoo, or hotmail; or by means of social engineering, e.g. if a scammer contacts the registrar support and pretends to be the owner of the domain who forgot the password. Stealing passwords is also possible through keyloggers and trojans installed on the domain owner’s computer.

How to avoid having a domain stolen?

- don’t use free email addresses in your domain contact details. Most people still do this and it puts their valuable domain assets as higher risk. Instead use an email address from your own domain.
- install and run an antivirus and antispyware software, update it frequently and run scans. Here is a good guide on cleaning your computer from spyware and viruses.
- always use strong passwords, random letters and numbers that are near each other on the keyboard. Use different passwords for everything and a password manager to keep track of them. Roboform is recommended. Change the passwords once in a while.
- keep your whois contacts and registrar information up to date read more »

List of 1477 Better Quality NNNNN.com

Posted in Lists, NNNNN.com on February 14th, 2008 by Michael – 2 Comments

NNNNN.com’s are running out by 2K registrations per day and around 6K are remaining right now.

Here is a list of better quality NNNNN.com’s that don’t have . All 5N’s with ’0′ at the end are already registered and ’0′ in other places, other than the last digit, is considered not good.

Download the list here

Also all NNNNN’s starting with 1,2 and 9 have been wiped out.
Please note that ’4′ is considered a bad digit as it supposedly brings bad luck in Chinese culture, but adding other digits, like 5,6,7 depending on the number might neutralize that effect. From that point it’s getting too complicated to be covered here, but you’re welcome to read up on numerology, thanks for the link to replic8te.

For me an easy way to get higher quality NNNNN’s is by simply checking google results for the number. Here are number of google results for the first 100 NNNNN’s from the list, sorted:

41758 154,000
41691 156,000

41679 236,000
41892 364,000
41738 365,000
