eBay Suing Digital Point over Cookie Stuffing Scheme

Posted in Forums, Legal, eBay on August 29th, 2008 by Michael – 5 Comments

eBay has filed suit against Digital Point Solutions, best known as the owner of one of the more popular web site owner communities, and others over an alleged cookie stuffing scheme.

According to the filing lodged in the Northern California District Court, Shawn Hogan and Digital Point Solutions, Todd Dunning and Kessler’s Flying Circus, and Brian Dunning and Thunderwood Holdings defrauded eBay in a “cookie stuffing” scheme that made it appear that their companies should be paid commissions on eBay affiliate sales.

The scheme worked like this: users were automatically redirected to eBay without clicking on an eBay advertisement, resulting in an affiliate cookie being place on each users computer marked with the defendants affiliate code so that for future purchases they received a cut.

The complaint alleges that the defendants tried to hide their scheme, using “deceptive means to prevent it from discovering the fraud, and to conceal it.” eBay is demanding “compensatory, treble and punitive damages.”

It’s not clear whether users on Digital Point itself were redirected under the scheme, but it would appear from the filing that there was a direct relationship at least on some levels.

In one way, it’s so simple as to be brilliant, but did they really think they could get away with it, or better still that eBay wouldn’t notice?

Needless to say the scheme has been around for almost as long as the Affiliate marketing itself, however lately due to multiple posts on digitalpoint forums it must have spread out widely and gotten  out of hands.

The story is duscussed almost everywhere in the web:

DP thread, 1, 2 , WickedFire, Sitepoint thread, blackhatworld, Digg and many more places. Will be interesting to see how it ends.

VURG started LLLL.com

Posted in LLLL.com, News on July 7th, 2008 by Michael – 2 Comments

www.LLLL.com is the new 4 letter domain portal by VURG, Philip O’Neil:

I have been a big supporter of Namepros in the past couple of years and try to devote some time to helping other members with their domain collections. I love the forums policy of keeping everything free. I expect big things to happen through Namepros in the future. I go by the name VURG and am also involved in other forums with that username including DNForum, DomainState and DNLodge. Online many people call me Vurg, not Phil. (Vurg.com was the first 4 letter domain that I bought.) I also spent a couple of years selling online through the name LessThan96 on eBay, LessThan96.com and LT96.com.

In May 2008, I aquired the domain LLLL.com with the view of using this domain to educate people on LLLL.com (4 letter domains) and provide services. I am currently using this name for blogging but with time plan on improving the domain with other services. This site is all about LLLL.com and so browse around for more info on 4 letter domains.

The site currently has a few interesting articles on LLLL.com domains, chosen sales history and links to auctions. More to come so add the name to your bookmarks.

$2.1MM For Lunch With World’s Richest Man

Posted in News on June 29th, 2008 by Michael – Be the first to comment

A Chinese investment fund manager won the chance to have lunch with billionaire Warren Buffett by bidding 2.1 million dollars (£1.05m) in the most expensive charity auction ever held on eBay.

Zhao Danyang of the Hong Kong-based Pureheart China Growth Investment Fund won the auction, which ended Friday evening with a bid of 2,110,100 dollars.

A spokeswoman for the Glide Foundation, which receives all the proceeds from the auction, identified the winner yesterday.

It appears that Zhao and Buffett share a similar investment philosophy.

The auction will provide a significant boost to Glide, which provides social services to the poor and homeless in San Francisco. The foundation operates on a 12 million dollar (£6m) annual budget, spokeswoman Denise Lamott said.

“It almost feels like a miracle,” Glide’s founder Reverend Cecil Williams said in a statement. “We are amazed and ready to continue our work of breaking the cycles of poverty.”

Last year’s lunch brought in 650,100 dollars (£325,000). read more »

Sahar Sarid: Our Best Domains

Posted in Articles, Blogs on April 2nd, 2008 by Michael – 1 Comment

Interesting and informative post by Sahar over at conceptualist.com:

Looking at our top domain names, here are some patterns we may all learn something from:

1. One or two word generic (descriptive) domain names, all .com

Self explanatory.

2. Traffic is usually strong and/or constant.

Massive traffic on some of the single word domains (hundreds or thousands of unique visits per day) isn’t unusual however, the more traffic a domain has the less targeted the likelihood. It is unusual to find domains which have a lot of traffic and are also extremely targeted and commercial. Those domains, if you are lucky to ever find one, can do thousands of dollars per day with a simple PPC page. read more »

Widgets.com on eBay

Posted in News, eBay on March 22nd, 2008 by Michael – 5 Comments

This week Rick Schwartz decided to quit blogging and put widgets.com on ebay.com

With 4 days to go now the auction is up to $120k

I’m pretty sure the reserve won’t be reached and domain won’t sell, so no idea why Rick decided to do that. eBay is certainly not the place to sell a domain like that.

Looks like he didn’t even take the time to write a proper description, read more »

iSearch.com Auction on eBay

Posted in Auctions, eBay on March 20th, 2008 by Michael – 1 Comment

Here is one auction to watch closely on eBay

iSearch.com - can it be the next search engine by Apple, or another major web-portal? Either way in the right auction, like the next moniker Traffic, it can fetch 6 figures.

So lets see how much eBay users have to offer. As of now highest offer is little over $40K with 2 hours remaining. My guess is it won’t hit the reserve..

Update: auction ended at $60K. This is truly one of these domains that their price depends largely on how and where you sell them. I’m sure we’ll see this name again this year making big news in the top sales :)
