Banks.ca Sells for $41000 to Set a New .ca Record!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

New record for .ca sales: $41000 for banks.ca at Pool.com today.

Previous high .ca sales:

savings.ca $36,050 2006-03-28 Pool
cruise.ca $33,363 2006-05-23 Pvt Sale

Some argue whether banks.ca is really worth much because there are only 6 banks in Canada, although I think it’s an excellent finance related domain and its value will only rise as the .ca registrations approach 1 million.

Banks.com is a developed site so it’s possible that they had interest in banks.ca as well.

Other reports suggest that the winning bidder was ready to pay as much as $112K!

Latest NNNNN.com and Other Numeric Sales

Huge Bug Found in Godaddy - Lots of Options for Fraud

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Rick reported this recently on his blog:

It appears GoDaddy.com gives you the option to cancel a transfer, after you have done an account change and the new owner has accepted the domain. How ludicrous is this? I’ve just had it happen a second time. Someone sends you a name, so you send them the money. The next thing they know, they pull it back! All they have to do is go to their account, go to pending account changes, check the box and click cancel. They can do this after it is finished!

Now in both cases it worked out fine because they had pulled it back because of a misunderstanding and quickly did another account change. It still leaves a huge door open for fraud.

I’m sure other registrars would let you pull back a domain as well, after you’ve pushed it.

I suppose it’s been around for a while, but this is the first time I hear about that and this could be a serious problem. Another reason to avoid godaddy and to be extra cautious, especially when dealing with new people.

Pizza.com To Be Auctioned on Sedo

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

pizza.com

Pizza.com is scheduled to be auctioned in GreatDomains monthly auction in 5 days.

Reserve is set to above 1 million and if it sells we might see another high value sale to top the annually charts.

Pizza.com is also a small developed site, which in this case probably doesn’t add much value. The new owner will definitely build something much larger to bring profits that can justify a 7 figures price for the domain.

Widgets.com on eBay

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

This week Rick Schwartz decided to quit blogging and put widgets.com on ebay.com

With 4 days to go now the auction is up to $120k

I’m pretty sure the reserve won’t be reached and domain won’t sell, so no idea why Rick decided to do that. eBay is certainly not the place to sell a domain like that.

Looks like he didn’t even take the time to write a proper description, (more…)

iSearch.com Auction on eBay

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Here is one auction to watch closely on eBay

iSearch.com - can it be the next search engine by Apple, or another major web-portal? Either way in the right auction, like the next moniker Traffic, it can fetch 6 figures.

So lets see how much eBay users have to offer. As of now highest offer is little over $40K with 2 hours remaining. My guess is it won’t hit the reserve..

Update: auction ended at $60K. This is truly one of these domains that their price depends largely on how and where you sell them. I’m sure we’ll see this name again this year making big news in the top sales :)

Dot Ca to Hit One Million Registrations Soon

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

One Million .ca logo
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) today launches its campaign to celebrate the registration of one million dot-ca domain names with the unveiling of a campaign website at onemilliondomains.ca. CIRA expects to reach the one million milestone in early April 2008 after passing 750,000 registrations just 18 months prior in October 2006. The campaign showcases the growth of dot-ca domain names, dot-ca websites and the Canadians behind them. (more…)

Google: Microsoft Acquisition of Yahoo would be “Bad for the Internet”

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

In a report published on Monday, Google said it was concerned about the free flow of information on the Internet if Microsoft was to succeed in acquiring Yahoo.“We would be concerned by any kind of acquisition of Yahoo by Microsoft,” Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told reporters.

“We would hope that anything they did would be consistent with the openness of the Internet, but I doubt it would be.”

Schmidt pointed to Microsoft’s past history and “the things that it has done that have been so difficult for everyone,” but he did not elaborate. (more…)
